Now this is a proper invention by the King Mongkut Institute of Technology: A rubber duck that detects electric currents in the floodwater. This could save a lot of lives, and is cute to boot! This looks like one sturdy raft, made from empty gallon tanks tied together. The bamboo stepladder is useful to stop you from slipping on the surface, and gives you something to hold on to.

With more than 30 provinces and many parts of Bangkok submerged by floodwater, the demand for boats and the prices of boats have rocketed. Fibre glass and plastic boats are being sold at double or triple the usual price by many vendors. Though certain manufacturers sell boats at reasonable prices for flood victims, rescuers and donors, demand greatly exceeds supply. Therefore, some flood victims have made boats from materials around them, but durability and safety is of concern. Fortunately, a team of National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec) researchers have developed do-it-yourself boats by using inexpensive local materials and focusing on practicality, durability and safety.
The team consists of Siwaruk Siwamogsatham, director of Wireless Information Security and Eco-Electronics Research Unit (WISRU), team members Patharakorn Rattanawan, Matanee Kitjaroen, Sawatsithang Kalapak and Werayuth Wallada, as well as Kullaprapa Navanugraha, senior director of the Research Management Office. They conducted research and developed the so-called Thai Pradit Chuay Chart boats (Thai do-it-yourself boats). These crafts can be easily made of inexpensive local materials, are practical and adaptable to other similar materials. They are capable of carrying a maximum weight of 250kg. Tests in freshwater swamps and the sea with strong waves prove that the boats can be controlled efficiently and used safely in real life.
''The boats focus on durability and safety according to engineering principles, not the cheapest price. Therefore, we choose quite strong materials. The structures of the boats are made of wood to ensure strength and are supported with buoys at their sides to ensure good balance and easy control,'' team member Siwaruk said.
''Users can use similar materials, but this may decrease effectiveness, strength, durability and safety. We tried replacing the cement mixing bowls with dishwashing bowls, which reduced the cost by about 2,000 baht, but this compromised effectiveness, strength and balance.''

MATERIALS
1. Two pieces of 10-metre-long 1.5x3 wood (300 baht)
2. One six-metre-long four-inch-wide PVC pipe (600 baht)
3. Four caps of four-inch-wide PVC pipe (400 baht)
4. Two large cement mixing bowls (1,400 baht)
5. A 50-metre-long 0.88mm-wide nylon rope (170 baht)
6. 28 three-inch nails (25 baht)
7. PVC pipe glue (15 baht)
8. Two wooden handles (40 baht)
9. Two cement mixing trays (40 baht)
The total cost is 2,990 baht
DIRECTIONS:
1. Assemble the wooden frames, each the same size as a cement mixing bowl, tie them securely with ropes, drill the rims of the bowls, fix them with the wooden frames, and tie them together firmly with the nylon rope.
2. Make buoys from PVC pipes, apply glue to prevent water leakage and fix the buoys to the wooden frames firmly.
3. The boat is ready for use

Tall bicycles and tricycles have been a trend among cyclists, including those in Thailand for a while. Exceptionally tall bikes are usually constructed by hobbyists from double frames, but this one is simply an extended version of the tricycle. What could be more trendy and functional at this time in Thailand? This father-and-son duo doesn’t have to worry if the floodwater rises waist-high; their feet will still be dry.
