關於 Rapier 我們先要認知一點 , 那就是 Rapier 為決鬥用的武器而不是軍事武器 . 文藝復興時期 ( 14 世纪至 17 世纪 ) 整個歐洲地區有 20 000 人死於決鬥 . 而文藝復興時期的決鬥大約有兩種規則 , 到死或見血 . 1. 到死 , 雙方對決直到有一方死去 . 有的時候雙方同時死去 2. 見血 , 誰先被割或刺到就算輸 . 這可以說是比較文明的一種決鬥 Rapier 本身的主要攻擊方式為刺擊 ( lunge ). 但是也同樣可以劈砍 . Rapier 劍身中間 ( Central Ridge ) 前劍身 ( Debole ) 頂點 ( point ) 的位置都有如剃刀一樣鋒利 . 雖然不提供軍事刀劍一般可以砍近骨頭裡但是只要位置對了絕對可以致命 . 有一點直得注意那就是接近劍顎 後劍身 (Farte ) 這一段一般來說是沒有開鋒的所以在歐洲古典劍術裡有很多抓後劍身 (Farte ) 的招術 . 事實上這是可行的 .
一開始我和很多人一樣對於 Rapier 的殺傷力保持懷疑的態度 . 畢竟比起其他武器 Rapier 造成的傷口很小 . Academie of Duello的一位前辈也是軍隊的長官 Wes 中校找出了劍術專家 Cohen 先生在他的書本 By the Sword 提出來幾個例子 .
1582 年的一個劍客 在一天之內三場決鬥中殺死了三個對手 , 他把刺穿第一個人的喉嚨 , 刺穿第二個人的心臟 , 刺穿最後一個人的肚子 .
[Of a duellist in 1582} "… this champion had taken on three local opponents in three days, killing the first with a thrust to the throat, the second by a lunge through the heart, and the third by running him through the belly." (p.47)
就算劍客沒有受到致命傷 , 之後劍傷的感染肯定是致命的 . 再決鬥之前一般的劍客會禁食和排尿以確保肚子被刺中之後減少感染的機率 …….. 大部分的死者死於決鬥之後 …1578 年一個貴族在決鬥 33 天後才死亡
"Nevertheless, the penetrating lade injury is a highly lethal one. Even if a victim’s internal organs were not hit, the raggedness of the opening and the almost certain likelihood of infection made rapier wounds fearsome. Duellists would typically ensure that they cleared their bladder and would not eat before an engagement, partly to make a slimmer target but also, should they be pierced in the gut or stomach, to limit the danger of infection. Most died long after the actual fight … in 1578 one noble took 33 days to die. (p.285)
不過這裡要注意的是致命不代表有足夠的動能來停止對方的行動 . 在軍事術語我們稱之為 Stopping Power. Cohen 也提到儘管主要的血管受到損害或大量失血 , 一個成人在 20-30 秒之間還可以保持清醒 . 一般來說可能需要 30 秒 -2 分鐘才會死亡 . 很多時候就算受到了致命傷劍克還可以繼續攻擊 . 這段時間足以報仇了 . 受到創傷的人很可能變成暴怒並直街衝向敵人 .
Even if the major arteries are cut and severe blood loss occurs, an adult can remain fully conscious from two to thirty seconds, with death occurring from between three seconds and two minutes later. Even mortally wounded duellists were sometimes able to continue fighting effectively long enough to take the lives of those who had taken theirs. A stricken man frequently does not feel the full effects of his wound and, blinded with rage, may simply throw himself on his opponent with renewed fury. (pp. 286-7)
這一點直得注意 . 決鬥的意義在於把對方殺掉而自己活著 , 由於 Rapier 的設計和攻擊技巧很多時候會變成雙方都死亡 . ( 在 lunge 的過程中如果角度錯誤會把自己撞入對方劍中 ) 正確的技巧應該是 lunge 過後要保持 “ in guard “ 的狀態來防止對方來一個最後的神風攻擊 .
