In view of the general curriculums for the training of architects, the 4-year program of architectural studies usually is not entitled to the professional degree in architecture. With the existing resources and facilities, the Department of Architecture at TTUAS can be expanded to accommodate a 5-year fully credited diploma program recognized by EU commission.
The new program may be an alternative to the older program in architecture offered in the Art Academy in Tallinn , which open a possibility to relocate to an up-to-date position for the architectural education in Estonia . In addition to the regular diploma program, to provide a research-oriented program of Master degree on specific field of emerging issues should be good for the long-term competitiveness.
Being situated in the center of Tallinn , the school has the advantage to take the whole city as a laboratory. It is foreseeable that to formulate a social-culturally relevant agenda out of immediate urban condition will be vital for pedagogical renewal. The guiding tasks of teaching, which not yet clear at the moment, can be traced back in the history to the present as well as towards the future of Tallinn .
The foundation course which reflecting the philosophy and approach of a well-founded school is essential. Under the geo-political multiple influences in Estonia , the 1 st year basic courses would be in the transition to strengthen her own identity. In this regard, teachers of artist background may be helpful in achieving a fresh language and working process in the context of Tallinn .
Some advanced courses on historical and theoretical topics in conjunction with first hand research works on the field, which produce scholarly publications, will be an asset and the backup of the direction of the school. Cross-disciplinary workshops and short courses would be another vehicle for catching up the dynamic discourses of recent development.
The areas of technology, including digital, environmental, structural and building, likely to be a distinct section at TTUAS, can be weaved into the support courses. In spite of the access to technological knowledge, a workshop for hands on making experiences and for material tests is still necessary for the design courses. Today, the design profession is being highly weighted as an important branch of creative industry. How to integrate the craftsmanship and technology is an ongoing experiment.
